We arose quickly and even quicker ate the breakfast which was delivered to our room. We were to meet a van a 20 minute walk away for today’s catamaran cruise. As this part of Oia, where were staying is not open to cars, we would need to hoof it to the meeting point. Fortunately we did with no issues. Quite a scenic but long drive as we picked up fellow passengers along the way.

Eventually we arrived at a port filled with private and commercial boats. We were directed to our boat after a long walk along the quay. We had to walk across two other boats but then we were set. A beautiful boat with a friendly crew. Then we were off! We sailed all along the western shores of Santorini, viewing the few beaches and all the volcanic strata that makes up the island. The crew gave us multiple opportunities to swim if we desired, but only one fellow passenger was brave enough to go in. While the water was beautiful it was cold! About two hours into the sail we dropped anchor and they prepared lunch for us. Grilled shrimp, chicken and sausage, pasta, dolmas and Greek salad. And wine. Yum!

After lunch we sailed onward, even seeing the town of Oia, where were staying. It’s really interesting how they’ve managed to build on some aspects of this volcanic island, but much of it sits on the top ridgelines. Considering that it is mostly mandated that the buildings have a particular style, all are whitewashed in lime and all the trim is the blue of the Greek flag. Totally charming.

Eventually we sailed back to the harbor, climbed aboard a large bus, on a meandering drive back to Oia. We decided a change of pace was in order, so we got wine and pizzas and sat our rooftop to eat and overlook the water and the well known sunset.

it’s wonderful to sit here and imagine.
