Finesterre – The End of the Earth

Or at least the end of this hike for me, but not the journey.

We awoke in our albergue in Cee, being especially quiet as one other hiker in our section was still asleep. We noshed on whatever we had in our packs and ventured out.

It was still a bit before sunrise as we made our way through the city. We soon decided to forego the route and stay along the water’s edge, which was more scenic.

A cafe was open at the juncture where we’d get back on the route so we stopped for coffee. On a Sunday, and a Spanish holiday weekend, we couldn’t pass up the chance.

Of course the path led us upwards. At one point I asked Mandy what the incline was, as her watch gives all that sort of detail. It was a 25% grade! Well! I was happy to have my poles to help propel me along.

Today’s walk was really delightful – full of small lanes through quaint areas then opening to beautiful views of the water, the beaches and the hills across the way.

We paused at the edge of one beach where Mandy and Karma braved wading in the cold water.

As we approached Finesterre there was a short boardwalk, which seemed appropriate, as we walked a boardwalk out of Lisbon and out of Porto.

We entered the town and found a small restaurant that sourced its food from local producers. We enjoyed the best vegan burgers we’ve had here.

Then it was time to head up the last 3 km to the light house which signifies the end of the trail. Of course it was uphill. We posed by a statue I recalled from before and then we reached the 00.00km marker! The true end. Mandy ended up taking photos of a number of others. Amazingly up walked Miriam, whom we met at an albergue a few days out of Lisbon.

We wandered out to sit on the rocks by the lighthouse to soak it all in. One of the best things? It was sunny and warm all day! Nary a drop of rain. That made it even more memorable after several weeks of always being wet.

We walked back down the hill and stopped at the municipal albergue to receive our Finesterre certificates. And who was there? Kevin and Caleb, the Canadians we met two days ago along with Nacho, from Madrid.

After our mutual greetings and figuring out that we’d probably see each other in Muxía, we parted ways. We walked a bit further and checked into our lodgings for tonight. A hotel! With separate rooms and private bathrooms! Such a pleasure.

We all got cleaned up then met up to plot out things for the next few days. We decided to head back to the lighthouse to view the sunset. But this time we took a taxi up. We procured drinks and found a table where we could look out.

Next to us was a large group of Spanish men who had obviously imbibed quite a bit while smoking cigars. They asked Mandy to take a picture of the group then roped us all in. Hilarious.

Then on our way to view the sunset from a better perspective we were stopped by a fan of Mandy’s instagram posts. She recognized Mandy and even looked at me and said, “and you must be mom!” Small world.

Our taxi driver had given Mandy his card so she called and he came to pick us up. And here we now sit after 2100 to have dinner outside in this beautiful evening. So Spanish!

Way to go all, I am so glad it was a beautiful day. Being by the ocean, through quaint towns, what could be better. You have all worked so hard and this was a day you deserved. So glad you and Mandy were recognized for all the work you both do in Mandy and Kevin’s journeys. I love reading Mandy’s blogs as well as yours. Really good job my friend!!! Thank you for the amazing photos.
