Spain!

We all had a marvelous sleep last night – love the hostels with the cubbies rather than old fashioned bunks as it’s quieter and more private. And there were no snorers!

We quickly ate breakfast and headed out. Valença is the most interesting place we’ve stayed, as the city is inside the walls of an old fortress. It zigs and zags all around on different levels. Fascinating. We spent extra time as we left the hostel to explore parts of it. The views over the Rio Minho into Spain were beautiful. Best of all it was not raining!

We walked through dark tunnels to exit the fortification and head over the river via the Ponte International Tui-Valença bridge. Halfway across we entered Spain!

And now we have to adjust from greeting everyone with “Bom Día” and “Bom Caminho” to “Buenos Dias” and “Buen Camino “. It feels good to be back.

We found a cafe once we were across the bridge and in Tui. I had my first cafe con leche that I remember fondly.

And then it was a day of walking, through small towns and fortunately rural areas that were easier on the feet.

We found a sweet garden cafe right after we left such a section filled with hikers. Michelle from last night came in shortly after us, then we saw the Canadian family from two nights ago. It’s fun to recognize some people.

We are noticing an influx of newbies – it happens as you get within 100 km of Santiago, as that’s all you need to walk to obtain the Compostela.

More horreas began appearing as well as large granite fences, as it is quarried nearby.

We are now in the town of O Porriño at what seems to be a pleasant hostel. Showered and stinky clothes in the wash. Both coveted things here.

I really enjoy seeing the delight on everyone’s face as you all sit down to enjoy lunch or snacks. Whether that be the relief of sitting, the anticipation of wonderful treat to eat, or the beautiful and historic sites, or a combination of all of those. It’s good to know what a wonderful world we live in. Thank you.
